Technology in Education in the PH

The widespread accessibility of technology has become a necessary part of the way we live and embedded in almost every aspect of education. Earlier, technology in education was a debatable topic amongst society. Everyone had their own perspective on redesigning education transforming it into a technology-aided education.  There are positive and negative responses to this matter. But, little by little as technology embraced by the educational society, they realized the significance of technology in education.

The technology education in the Philippines according to the 2019 Philippines EdTech Ecosystem Review says that Philippine schools benefit from a strong and sustained government commitment to technology infrastructure, both general (electrification, internet penetration) and school-specific (computers, school connectivity). Some rural areas still suffer from poor general infrastructure, but the government and private-sector partnerships exist targeting these last-mile schools with appropriate packages.

Teachers in the Philippines and around the world mostly use technology to digitize existing lessons and other educational matters using standard productivity tools like word processing, slide presentations, and spreadsheets. They also use technology to replace old models of structured, rote learning and create more individual, self-directed experiences for their students. Teachers need to seriously consider how these newer materials can affect what and how we learn and teach. Technology also gives a huge impact on students’ personal and educational needs. They use technology to meet, collaborate, create content virtually, and research on a specific and variety of content and ideas. Technology also helps students better engaged with course material and technology becomes their global dictionary.

Technologies open a greater opportunity for communication and collaboration. With technology, student collaboration and collaborative learning are much easier to facilitate, it gives them a chance to share their voices, opinions, and work with their peers. It allows them to connect and work outside the classroom and develop a good rapport with others. When students are using technology as a support for communicating and collaborating with others, their roles become different from the traditional, they become in an active role in receiving the transmitted information, they are responsible for how to generate, obtain and display information. The teacher’s role changes as well, the teacher plays as the facilitator and no longer the center of attention.

Technology is a powerful tool to strengthen the teaching and learning process inside and outside the classroom. The technology itself enables educators to connect with a broad audience and it can help affirm and advance relationships between educators and students. The role of technology in education becomes vital and as the world continues to progress, technology also continues to have a huge impact on education.
